1. What is this girl's name? This girl's name is Mary. Students may invent any proper name (e.g. Ruth, Lucy, Betty). Reinforce capitalizing proper names.
2. Where do you think she has been, and what for? She has been to the hen-house to gather eggs. Also acceptable: She has been to the barn to find eggs. Encourages inference from visual clues.
3. What does she hold with both hands, and what are in it? With both hands she holds a pan, in which are some eggs. Official textbook model. Praise students who successfully copy or adapt this sentence structure.
4. What is in front of the girl? In front of the girl is a mother hen. Also acceptable: A hen is in front of her. Practice inverted word order with prepositional phrase.
5. Where is the little chicken? The little chicken is perched on the ladder. Acceptable: The little chicken is on the roost / steps. Location preposition on.
Picture Exploration Questions
Guide oral observation before writing: Point to the girl's straw bonnet, the pan full of white eggs, the mother hen at her feet, and the chick up on the coop ladder.
Sentence Combining Technique
Show how the model sentence unites two short questions: She holds a pan. In the pan are eggs. $ ightarrow$ With both hands she holds a pan, in which are some eggs.
Evaluation Metric Target Standard (Exemplary) Common Correction Points
Complete Statements All responses written in full declarative sentences. Ensure student does not write fragments (e.g. "Mary", "Eggs").
United Sentence Item 3 combines holding the pan and the eggs into one cohesive sentence. Guide students to use the model provided on page 1.
