TEACHER GUIDE & ANSWER KEY — LESSON 73

Instructor Key • Page 2 of 2
Pedagogical Overview • Prepositional Phrases as Descriptive Tools
Lesson 73 develops the second-grader's ability to elaborate predicates through prepositional and participial phrases. Rather than merely stating *“The mother is here”* or *“Eddie stands,”* students employ exact phrases of location (*in a chair*, *on a foot-stool*, *behind the chair*, *over his mother's eyes*) and active participle modifiers (*sewing in her hands*).
Section 1 Model Answers • Guided Inquiries

1. Mother's Place: “Eddie's mother is comfortably sitting in a chair [or rocking chair].”

2. Hands & Work: “She has been holding her needlework and sewing in her hands.”

3. Eddie's Position: “Little Eddie is standing on a foot-stool, right behind the chair.”

4. Playful Action: “With a gentle smile, Eddie puts his hands over his mother's eyes.”

Section 2 Model Answers • Narrative Picture Description

Exemplar Student Paragraph:
Mother is sitting in a rocking chair with quiet sewing in her hands. Little Eddie climbed onto a foot-stool right behind the chair so he could reach her shoulders. Then he laughed softly and placed both hands over his mother's eyes to play a guessing game.

Note: Ensure student paragraph incorporates all 5 required phrases naturally with smooth transitional flow.

Section 3 Model Answers • Inquiring Mind & Prediction

Exemplar Question: “Mother, can you guess which little boy is covering your eyes?” (Must end with a question mark ‘?’ and begin with a capital letter).

Exemplar Prediction: “I think mother will smile, guess many funny names, and then turn around to give Eddie a warm hug.”

R Four-Domain Evaluation Rubric (Total: 100 Points)
Domain Exemplary (25) Proficient (20) Developing (15) Beginning (10) Teacher Feedback
1. Phrase Integration Flawlessly incorporates all 5 phrases into grammatically sound clauses. Incorporates 4–5 phrases with minor syntactic stiffness. Uses 2–3 phrases; misses prepositional completeness. Omits required phrases or writes disjointed fragments.
2. Narrative Cohesion Rich narrative flow connecting mother's sewing and Eddie's game. Clear sequence describing the scene logically. Simple list of sentences without strong narrative connection. Confusing, incomplete, or unrelated statements.
3. Question & Prediction Inquisitive question with ‘?’ and creative, plausible future prediction. Valid question and prediction with basic detail. Question lacks ‘?’ or prediction lacks logical connection. Missing either question or prediction task.
4. Mechanics & Penmanship Exemplary penmanship, proper spacing, zero spelling slips. Clean handwriting with 1–2 minor capitalization slips. Multiple capitalization or period errors. Pervasive run-ons, illegible lines, lowercase starters.
