Lesson 47 Teacher Guide & Scoring Rubric
Teacher Key
Pestalozzian Object Teaching (Serl): Train pupils to observe concrete objects using sensory attributes (shape, color, texture, interior parts, seeds) before expressing scientific facts in oral and written sentences.
Standards Addressed: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.1 (Key Details & Observation), L.2.1 (Complete Sentence Construction), L.2.5.A (Real-world word connections).
Section 1: Fruit Observation & Structure
1. Growth: apple tree.
2. Shape & Colors: Round (spherical) / Red, green, yellow, or striped.
3. Inner Flesh: flesh or pulp.
4. Ripe Seeds: Dark brown or black.
Section 2: Anatomy Detective & Full Sentences
A. Matching: Peel → Protects outside; Pulp → Sweet edible part; Core → Houses the small seeds.
B. Full Sentence: Apples are used for eating fresh, making cider, and baking sweet pies. (Must start with capital and end with period).
Section 3: Descriptive Paragraph Composition (Sample Answers)
A ripe red apple is round, smooth, and sweet. When you bite into the crisp white flesh, it tastes juicy and delicious.
Section 4: Orchard Life Reflection (Sample Answers)
• Farmers pick apples in autumn so the cold frost does not freeze or bruise the ripe fruit.
• Concrete Hands-on Demonstration: If feasible, cut an apple crosswise to reveal the five-pointed star containing the seeds. Point out the core, stem, and skin.
• Avoiding Fragments: Ensure students write full sentences rather than single-word fragments (e.g., "It grew on an apple tree." vs. "apple tree").
