Grade 2 • Lesson 3: The Question — Answer Key

Grade 2 • Module 3 • Interrogative Sentences
📖 Classical Pedagogy & Interrogative Syntax
Pedagogical Objective: Establishing the second major sentence category: the question (interrogative sentence). Pupils learn to distinguish telling sentences (statements ending with periods) from asking sentences (questions ending with interrogation points). Guide children to hear the rising vocal pitch at the end of a question.
Socratic Oral Sequence: Contrast voice intonation: Say 'The bird will sing.' (Voice falls at the end). Then say: 'Will the bird sing?' (Voice rises at the end). Ask pupils: 'Which sentence asks you to answer? What mark do we place at the end of an asking sentence?'
Exemplary Answers & Model Transcriptions

Model Answer: Each question begins with a capital letter.
Teaching Guidance: Universal capitalization rule across all sentence types.
● Question 2: How does each question end?
Model Answer: Each question ends with an interrogation point (or question mark).
Teaching Guidance: Teach the traditional term 'interrogation point' alongside 'question mark'.
● Question 3: What does a question do?
Model Answer: A sentence that asks something is called a question.
Teaching Guidance: Recite the textbook definition verbatim.
● Question 4: Copywork — Will the bird sing?
Model Transcription: Will the bird sing?
Teaching Guidance: Inverted word order: auxiliary 'Will' precedes subject 'the bird'.
● Question 5: Copywork — Do stars twinkle?
Model Transcription: Do stars twinkle?
Teaching Guidance: Auxiliary 'Do' before plural subject 'stars'.
● Question 6: Copywork — Are the leaves green?
Model Transcription: Are the leaves green?
Teaching Guidance: Linking verb 'Are' inverted before subject 'the leaves'.
● Question 7: Student Original Question (Sample)
Model Answers: Does the sweet bird sleep in its nest at night? / Can you see the crescent moon among the stars?
Teaching Guidance: Must be a genuine asking sentence ending with an interrogation point (?).
Common Errors to Address: Check that pupils draw the interrogation point cleanly (? with curved hook and bottom dot). Ensure they do not close a question with a period.
