Lesson 27: Teacher Guide & Master Solutions

Visual Literacy • Deductive Observation & Narration
Observation vs. Inference in Picture Study: Lesson 27 guides Grade 2 children to move from passive seeing to active deduction. They identify physical clues (smoke rising from chimney → fire in the hearth; clear shadows on the ground → sunny day; lush leafy trees and light clothes → summer) and translate their reasoning into complete, syntactically polished declarative statements.
Section A: Master Solution Exemplars:
1. What are the two boys doing?
→ The two boys are carrying a large laundry basket together along the lane.
2. What shows that the older boy is kind to his little brother?
→ He carries the heavier front of the basket and smiles kindly back at his brother.
3. What shows there is a fire in the cottage behind them?
→ A thick plume of smoke is rising from the brick chimney.
4. Is the day sunny or cloudy, and how do you know?
→ The day is bright and sunny because the boys and chickens cast distinct dark shadows on the path.
Section B: Exemplar Written Narrations:
• Model 1: Two loving brothers carried a heavy covered basket down the country road. Beside them, three hungry hens fluttered and pecked near the stone wall. In the distance, smoke rose from their cozy cottage chimney where Mother was cooking dinner.
• Model 2: Henry and little George walked carefully down the grassy lane. The older brother held the front of the wooden pole so the basket would not drag on the ground. It was a warm, sunny summer morning.
Charlotte Mason Narration Method:
1. Study: Have the child look at the engraving quietly for two minutes, noticing every small detail (the birds in flight, the hen on the fence, the striped stockings).
2. Turn & Tell: Have the child turn the page away and describe everything remembered orally before picking up the pencil to write.
Evaluation Criterion Exemplary (4) Proficient (3) Developing (1-2)
Observation & Evidence Cites concrete visual evidence for all 4 inquiries (smoke, shadows, basket pole, expressions). Answers 3-4 inquiries accurately with basic visual clues. Gives vague answers without citing visual details from the picture.
Complete Statements Every response is a grammatically complete statement with subject and predicate. All responses are complete sentences with minor phrasing awkwardness. Answers in one-word fragments or incomplete stems.
Narration from Memory Composes 3 vivid, connected descriptive sentences capturing the scene. Writes 3 related sentences with simple descriptions. Fewer than 3 sentences or disorganized thoughts.
Mechanics & Handwriting Flawless capitalization, periods at every statement end, neat handwriting on lines. Legible handwriting; 1 minor punctuation slip. Multiple missed capital letters or omitted terminal punctuation.
