TEACHER KEY & PEDAGOGICAL GUIDE Grade 2 • Lesson 14: The Seasons
Curriculum Standard: Capitalization Standards & Coordinate Punctuation
The Vital Capitalization Rule (Seasons vs. Months & Holidays):
A frequent error in elementary writing is capitalizing seasons. In English, spring, summer, autumn, winter are general common nouns and remain in lowercase (unless opening a sentence). In contrast, months (March, April) and holidays (Christmas, Thanksgiving Day) are proper nouns and always require capitals.
Section A • Comma Insertion Key:
  1. Spring, summer, autumn, and winter are seasons. (Commas after Spring, summer, and autumn).
  2. March, April, and May are the spring months. (Commas after March and April).
  3. September, October, and November are autumn months. (Commas after September and October).
  4. Thanksgiving Day, Christmas, New Year's Day, and Fourth of July are holidays. (Commas separate compound proper nouns: after Day, Christmas, and Day).
Section B • Model Pupil Compositions:
  • Summer months: June, July, and August are the summer months.
  • Favorite holidays: I love Christmas, Thanksgiving Day, and Easter.
Teacher Diagnostic Note on Compound Proper Nouns:
Sentence 4 contains compound holiday names (Thanksgiving Day, New Year's Day, Fourth of July). Ensure the child places the comma after the complete name of the holiday, not between words within the name.
