TEACHER KEY & PEDAGOGICAL GUIDE Grade 2 • Lesson 13: The Months
Curriculum Standard: Proper Nouns & Sentence Synthesis
Syntactic Synthesis: Combining Coordinate Clauses:
The classic prompt "Unite your answers. Do not forget the commas" teaches sentence efficiency. Instead of writing three childishly repetitive sentences ("It is warm in June. It is warm in July. It is warm in August."), the child learns to combine the three objects of the preposition into a single elegant series.
Section B • Master Synthesized Sentences:
  1. It is warm in June, July, and August. (Capitalized proper names; serial commas after June and July; terminal period).
  2. It is cold in December, January, and February. (Capitalized proper names; serial commas after December and January; terminal period).
Section C • Model Calendar Statements:
  • The school year begins in September. (Or August, depending on school calendar).
  • My birthday is in [Month]. (Full statement, capitalization of month).
Cultural & Orthographic Note for Teachers:
Remind pupils that month names originate from ancient Roman gods, emperors, and numbers (e.g., Janus for January, Mars for March, Julius Caesar for July, Augustus for August). Because they are proper names, their capitalization is non-negotiable.
Competency Mastery (Exemplary) Developing Needs Guidance
Proper Noun Capitalization All month names capitalized without exception. 1 lowercase month name. Multiple months written in lowercase.
Serial Comma Usage Both united sentences include commas after 1st and 2nd months. Omitted comma before and. Commas completely omitted in series.
Sentence Synthesis Flawlessly merges three questions into one cohesive statement. Merges with awkward phrasing or repeated words. Writes 3 separate sentences instead of 1.
Penmanship & Mechanics Neat baseline alignment with initial capital and final period. 1 punctuation error or uneven letter sizes. Missing periods and sloppy handwriting.
